Trevor Hunter: University of North Texas College of Information Science Notable Alumni
In the heart of Dallas, Trevor Hunter started on a journey of unexpected turns and remarkable progress, achieving the role of Library Director just 5 years post-graduation, that led to where he is now at a public technology-focused library and event center, called The Homestead Cybrarium serving the city of Homestead, Florida. There he manages a staff of 13 humans and a robot along with managing the adoption of VR and other consumer technology.
Starting with a love for history, Trevor pursued a master’s degree but found himself drawn into the world of library science instead. Despite initial setbacks, he embraced this new path with open arms and focused on library science with a concentration in archival management.
After graduation in 2017, Trevor landed a position at the Dallas Public Library as an Adult Services Librarian. Trevor’s career was a testament to his adaptability and commitment to public service. He moved from Dallas to the Desoto Library as Library Technology Manager after two years, and then after another 2 years, he made another change. In 2022, he became the Library Director at Manske Public Library in Farmer’s Branch, blending his passion for public libraries with his expertise in technology.
Trevor says that he appreciated UNT’s master’s in library science for is asynchronous, online, and flexible nature that allowed him to work and support himself while in school. He says, “The program really gave me the nuts and bolts of what it means to be a librarian along with other library concepts that could be put into practice.”
Trevor’s advice to current students is simple yet profound: stay flexible, stay aware, and don’t fear change. His story serves as a reminder that every challenge is an opportunity in disguise.
In libraries and beyond, Trevor’s story inspires us to embrace the unexpected, to pursue our passions with unwavering dedication, and to never underestimate the ability to adapt to new situations. Trevor invites you to visit using a new Virtual Tour of the Cybrarium. Trevor says, “It’s an awesome way to visit without coming to Florida.”
