Amanda Sturdivant: Huntsville Public Library’s Outreach and Programs Coordinator
HUNTSVILLE, TX – Amanda Sturdivant, Outreach and Programs Coordinator at the Huntsville Public Library, is bringing a vibrant wave of creativity and community engagement to the city. Since joining the library in November 2023, Sturdivant has been a driving force behind numerous programs aimed at fostering a love for reading and art among residents of all ages.
With a background as an art teacher for 12 years, including six years at Lake Creek High School in Montgomery, Sturdivant’s transition to the library was driven by a desire for a better work-life balance. “The balance of teacher life and personal life got to be a little unbalanced for me,” she said. “I re-evaluated and prayed about it, and leaving my classroom was the best choice I could have made for me and my family.”
Sturdivant’s passion for art and education shines through in her work at the library. “I’m an artist by nature, so I like to bring a lot of art things to the library,” she shared. “I’m teaching painting classes and adult art lessons, staying true to who I am.”
Under her leadership, the library’s summer reading program has flourished, with events scheduled almost every day for children, teens, and adults. “It’s busy, it’s exciting,” she said. “We have a lot of people in there, and it keeps us busy.”
Sturdivant’s commitment to community outreach is evident in her goals for the future. “My goal is to really get to know Huntsville and reach out to the community,” she explained. “I want to go to schools, daycares, and homeschool groups, and really connect to the community more.”
Her enthusiasm for the library’s role in the community is infectious. “The children’s room is gigantic,” she said, highlighting the extensive resources and activities available for young readers. “We have story times, literacy kits, games, and even giant books you can check out.”
Sturdivant’s impact extends beyond the library walls, as she works to build relationships with local organizations. “We’ve gotten a ton of support from Huntsville and local organizations,” she said. “The Walker County Beekeeper Association, the Walker County Audubon Society, Parks and Wildlife, and many others have supported us.”
For Sturdivant, the library is not just a place for books but a hub for community engagement and lifelong learning. “We have something for everybody,” she said. “Our goal is to continue to learn about Huntsville, be seen, and share the free services that the library can offer to everyone.”
With her dedication and innovative approach, Amanda Sturdivant is making the Huntsville Public Library a vibrant and essential part of the community. The library is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Library cards are available for free to all residents, regardless of whether they live within the city limits.
